Donald Fitts
Donald Louis Fitts, 83, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 11:55 A.M. July 28, 2017 at his residence in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais, Illinois. Graveside Service: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Mound Grove Cemetery in Kankakee. Interment: Mound Grove Cemetery.
He was born March 22, 1934 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to Louie and Opal (Threatt) Fitts. He first married Virginia Smith on April 4, 1953 and she preceded him in death on December 23, 1986. He later married Zella M. (Goffinett) Glatz on November 14, 1992 in Mount Vernon, Illinois and she survives.
Donald is survived by his wife, Zella M. Fitts of Mount Vernon, Illinois; five children, John Fitts and wife Michelle of Bourbonnais, Illinois, Tom Fitts and wife Lori of Bradley, Illinois, Jennifer Spangler and husband Allen of Manteno, Illinois, Scott Fitts of Bourbonnais, Illinois, and Beth Weiss and husband Tony of Dayton, Ohio; stepchildren, Joe Glatz of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Brenda Hapeman and husband Bruce of Woodlawn, Illinois; sister, Carolyn Sue Neel and husband Bernard of Irving, Texas; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Virginia (Smith) Fitts; two sons, Richard “Dick” Fitts and infant son, Steven Fitts; and sister, Norma Jean Kelley.
Mr. Fitts served our country in the United States Air Force. He worked as a salesman for Golden Rule Insurance where he earned the position of top salesman for three consecutive years. Donald later worked for the Police Department in Bradley, Illinois and the Kankakee Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Mount Vernon Elks Lodge #819, the Mount Vernon American Legion Post #141, the Knights of Columbus, and was one of the founding members of the YMCA.
Visitation: 3:00 to 4:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Rosary Service will be held before the visitation at 2:30 P.M. at the church. Funeral Service: 4:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Father John Iffert officiating.
