John Skopik, age 79, of Kankakee passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. 


Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradley. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery in Bourbonnais.


John was born October 28, 1944, in Kankakee, the son of John and Bernadette (Adams) Skopik. John married Karyn Tutewiler on September 4 ,1965, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradley.


John was a Railroad Conductor for Norfolk & Southern Railroad, retiring after 42 years. He was a 1962 graduate of Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School. John was an avid Chicago White Sox fan. He enjoyed bowling and golfing. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. John was a member of the Bradley American Legion Post 766 and the Knights of Columbus.


He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as an M.P. during the Vietnam Conflict.


John was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradley.


Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Karyn Skopik of Kankakee; one son, Todd Skopik of Bradley; one daughter and two sons-in-law, Paige & John Chinski of Bourbonnais and John Garrett of Bradley; one brother and sister-in-law, Steve & Leslie Skopik of Canton, GA; nine grandchildren, Samantha, Jordan, Olivia, Rylee, Ariana, Gabrielle, Emma, Dawn, and Reice; and four great-grandchildren, Macey, Leia, Alaina, and Adilynn. John is preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Kayne Garrett.


Memorials may be made to St. Joseph  Catholic Church or the Illinois Veterans Home at Manteno.
