The sound of the parish musicians is being heard outside of the church walls. The members of the various choir groups, including the student choir, have recorded and produced a special CD. The album is a compilation of their favorite songs with some combined selections too.

The project is a fundraiser for St. Joseph’s, according to Jeanine Paul, parish music director. She hopes the CD will be a reminder of the love the choirs have for their parish community, “and most of all, that the music will bring people closer to Christ.”

The music director has nothing but respect and admiration for the people who step out of their comfort zones and lead the congregation in song at this faith community. “I love all the music ministers of this parish. They are so loving, caring and giving in every possible way."

It’s not easy to get up in front of people and put one’s heart and soul out there as a parish choir member. The nervousness and anxiety melts away, however, when one of them catches a glimpse of a believer in the assembly with eyes closed, deep in prayer, feeling the Lord through the music. A fire ignites in the soul of the choir member who sees someone connecting with a particular piece. It’s an awesome moment when one of these musicians realizes a song has somehow moved a worshipper, stressed Christina Halawa of the parish’s Ensemble II who often stands closest to the piano and usually does the cantoring gestures during Masses with the contemporary group.

Their “thank you” from the congregation comes when the people in the pews experience the power of the songs and are moved to sing with them, mentioned Halawa. “They are a joy to be with,” added the woman of faith about her involvement with the other music ministers and her interactions with the people of the parish. As for the CD, Halawa added she hopes it is the first of many of its kind.

The strength to lead the parish community in song comes from the Holy Spirit. These special men and women have answered the call to use their talents to glorify God and inspire others to join them. Being involved in the parish music ministry is a rewarding experience, but it’s also a commitment. Choir members meet with their respective groups throughout the week to fine-tune existing arrangements and learn new songs for weekend liturgies. In addition to their regular practices, the members of each of the parish choirs have given time to record selections for the CD, titled "Be Lifted Up."

“I think it’s a good idea,” said Joanne Hart, who leads the parish Adult Choir. “We’ve never done this kind of thing before … The choir is really excited about the CD,” she added. The life-long parishioner, who has been active in parish music ministry for decades, said she hopes the entire parish community will be enthused about the compilation too. Talking about the choir’s recent recording session, Hart laughed, saying, “It was kind of fun to do.”

"Be Lifted Up" by this special compilation of songs from each parish music group. A $10 minimum donation is requested for the CD ... Proceeds will benefit the ministries of St. Joseph's. The CDs are  available in the parish office.  (The songs on this first-ever parish music CD are to the right.)
